Media in the online age

in my media lesson today we looked and discussed the subject of media in the online age. we looked at how the media have changed from early 1920's to what the media is today and how we consume and produce digital media, here is the introduction of my essay

discuss the extent to which the distribution and consumption of media have been transformed by the internet

From the 1920s to today the media has changed significantly, from 1925 to have the first television to be made, to 1983 having the internet discovered, therefore leading to the internet producing Online Media. Online media is digital media which includes; videos, photos and music, all are distributed over the internet. The media used to have a very limited range of industries. However to present day the media now has a wide range of different industries and media has now become more accessible than ever. For example, traditional TV companies such as the BBC were only accessible through television, until the BBC iPlayer was introduced in July 2007.  The TV companies catch up and streaming, the service is available on a wide range of devices, including mobile phones and tablets, personal computers, and smart televisions. The BBC iPlayer and BBC Media Player refer to various methods for viewing or listening to the same content. Viewing live television broadcasts from any UK broadcaster or BBC TV catch-up or on demand programmes. Reasons for this are that the media is evolving and changing. Because more TV is watched on smart devices and catch up services, therefore the traditional TV companies need to change their online media, as generation are being more electronically aware. This means that children are now growing up with watching YouTube videos and more online media. Therefore this means that companies need to change they advertise to what the demand of the audience is, traditional TV companies also use online media to also make their TV streaming and catch up more accessible to those who cannot afford TV’s, this then means that the TV company is then allowed to extend their audience.

Further to this online subscription streaming companies have also evolved over the years. For example Netflix, it was Founded in California in 1997, the company started as a small DVD-by-mail service in the US, and specialized in streaming media and video on demand over the years. The number of Netflix streaming subscribers has been constantly increasing over the years; the online streaming company is now available in 200 countries with approximately 117.6 million subscribers. However, only 23% of adults watch videos on Netflix. This means that’s 77% of Netflix users are teenagers. This shows that the majority of the youth prefer watching online videos to watching television; this then shows how the online media has evolved over the years. Furthermore, statistics show that 70% of users binge watch the online TV shows, this therefore sows that online subscription Is changing the online media and meeting the demand  of today’s audience as the access to Netflix and online subscription sites is easy and affordable.

Ancillary text DVD cover

Dvd by Anonymous LOzN9Vd on Scribd

For my DVD cover i used conventional tropes of a professional DVD cover. for example i named the main actors used in the production and put their names on the back cover of the DVD. i also used the directors and producers n the bottom of the back cover. i also placed the 5 stars at the bottom on the DVD cover therefore the audience can recognise the reviews and ratings. The title of the DVD is large at the front cover and it is smaller along the spine, this is so it draws and focuses the audiences attention to the title and the image of the front cover. The DVD cover also shows that symbol of PG (parental guidance) which means general viewing but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. this icon is visible on the back of the cover therefore making it noticeable for the audience along the back of the cover i have placed a range of different images on the back as a teaser for the audience for what might happen in the video.

for the front cover i used Photoshop to create this double exposure effect on the protagonist of the video i felt that this was effective for the cover as it immediately draws the consumers attention to the front of the cover and pulls them in wanting to find out more. i used the image of a forest to overlay the face of the actress Lauren in the cover as one of the scenes in the video is in the forest therefore i thought that the image of the actress and the trees would create an interesting image and also set the scene for the video, i decided to also have the image in black and white as the dance scenes in the video are shot in black and white and it portrays a lot of emotion for the protagonist and also it creates the atmosphere that it is going to be quite a sad ad emotional video and starts to leave the audience  making questions about the film wanting them to know more therefore intriguing them into watching the video.

Ed Sheeran - thinking out loud

For my main product, we wanted out video to have dance interpreted into the music video. for example in ed sheeran's "thinking out loud music video" it is a ballroom dance video. this is effective as it shows the relationship between the characters in the video and shows he connection that they have for one anther. we thought that using dance in our music video would be effective as it will show the emotions of the protagonist and she will express her feelings through movement.

here is Ed Sheerans "thinking out loud" music video:

Poster

Sam Smith

My main  product is a story of a girl who has lost someone close to her, and we want to portray our protagonist to be really emotional: throughout Sam smiths music video "stay with me" the video has numerous slow motions shots. we thought that this would be a good idea for our production as the slow motion shots, shows emotion and sadness, we also wanted to get the message across that the time around our main protagonist is moving slowly as she is still recovering from a broken heart. therefore we thought that the slow motion effect would be successful in achieving this.

Adele

for
my main task i have looked at various artists to gather inspiration for my music video. one of the artists that i looked at was Adele. i particularly looked at her music video for her song "someone like you" from her album '21'. This is because, throughout the video, the film in in black and white. i thought that this was very effective as the black and white compliment the video genre and the song in that she is going through a break up. the colour of the film shows the emotions that the singer is going through, this then connects the audience with he feelings of the singer in he video making them understand how they feel. we then wanted to have this same affect in our video therefore having some of our video in back and white to develop the feelings and emotions of the characters. Moreover, towards the end of the song the music video then has overlaying images which creates a nice effect of memories, we also wanted to include this into our product as it gives a nice effect to the video.

Evaluation question 4: how did you use new media technologies in the construction and research planning and evaluation stage

for this question i will be doing a magazine interview on the different technologies that i used throughout my media and how this enabled me to get the best possible results put of my product i will also be asking what media technologies i used in order to help plan my media product and finally will be asking what media technologies helped me with the evaluation stage of my product.

Evaluation question 3: what have you learned from your audience feedback?

For this question i will be doing an interview on the public, asking people to watch my media product and asking them what they think of the product of the product overall and then asking them a few questions on the product, i will then be giving a short conclusion at the end of the interviews

Evaluation question 2: how effective is the combination of your main product and your ancillary texts?

In this question it is asking me to give an understanding of how my ancillary texts will influence my main product into making it successful. For this question i will have someone interviewing me asking me question on why my ancillary texts help my main product, why i choose these types of ancillary texts. this is so that

Evaluation question 1: in what ways does your media product use, develop, challenge forms and conventions of real media products

for this question i could answer this by at the start showing a clip of a real opening scene form a film and then  using a running commentary show how the real media compares with my media product showing the different conventions in both products

Virtual revolution

The virtual revolution

20 years on from the invention of the World Wide Web Dr Aleks Krotoski explores how it is reshaping almost every aspect of our lives. Joined by some of the web's biggest names including the founders of Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Apple and Microsoft and the web's inventor - she explores how far the web has lived up to its early promise.

The founding father of the Web, Tim Berners-Lee, believed his invention would remain an open frontier that nobody could own, and that it would take power from the few and give it to the many. Now, in a provocative, strongly authored argument, presenter Aleks Krotoski will re-assess Utopian claims like these, made over many years by the digital revolution's key innovators - and test them against the hard realities of the emerging Web today, exploring how the possibilities of the pure technology have been constrained, even distorted by the limitations of human nature.

here is the opening of the documentary on the virtual revolution:
